Cloud Computing is the rocket ship of the tech world you haven't heard about yet.

Why you ask? Because news about servers, infrastructure-level technologies, and new business models around shared computing resources isn't exactly the stuff of thrilling headlines. To top it off, these technologies are complex. But mastering them—especially as a college student—can be extremely rewarding professionally and financially.

Even if you don't end up becoming a cloud engineer, this skill set will be a powerful addition to your arsenal and could make you far more attractive in the eyes of the world's largest companies.

Cloud growth

Growth based on revenue.
Sources: Gartner and Statistica.

But first: What is Cloud Computing?

The platform upon which almost every modern website or service is built.
The "cloud" is a massive network of computers.

Most companies today no longer buy and maintain their own computers (called servers) to host their websites—they lease those computers from others. They do this because, due to technological progress, computing power has become extremely cheap. Imagine if staying in a hotel cost $1 per night, not $100. Would you ever buy a house?

Companies need engineers to maintain this network.

People and companies use computers for a huge variety of things—running calculations, storing files and images, sending or receiving information, and so on—so companies that provide cloud services (like Amazon Web Services) need an army of engineers to make sure all these computers are functioning properly. That's where you and your new skill set come in: learning the techniques these engineers use may help you land up at the world's biggest companies.

There's a massive skills demand in the industry.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) accounted for around 10% of Amazon's total revenue in 2018, or over $25 billion (more than McDonalds's). According to LinkedIn data, Cloud Computing is the #1 skill companies need most in 2019, up there with Artificial Intelligence!

Case study: The Amazon Web Services Toolkit

AWS engineers work with a large array of tools on a daily basis. Here are the most common ones, and the ones you'll learn about in our class.

Ec2

Amazon EC2

Elastic Compute Cloud allows companies to rent Amazon's spare computing power and run anything from a website to huge machine learning algorithms.

S3

Amazon S3

Simple Storage Service gives you the power to host massive files online—think of it kind of like a Dropbox for coders and websites.

Cloudwatch

Amazon Cloudwatch

CloudWatch collects monitoring and operational data in the form of logs, metrics, and events, so you'll know instantly if a service goes down.

Vpc

Amazon VPC

Virtual Private Cloud lets you provision a logically isolated section of the AWS Cloud where you can launch AWS resources in a virtual network.
